Can't say how much I love this game! Can't wait for the full release.

(+1)

Holy cow this looks fun. Fantastic job.

(+2)

Impressive game!

Well, I have been enjoying this demo a GREAT deal, even though it's the non-patron one, I have been having some fun.

I found a problem or two though:

I set up a beehive out in front of the main farm house just a tile or two away and a bit to the right of the main door, and every time I come in from the animal farm one screen up, the honey is ready and available to take, so I can go away and back and farm honey.

Also I have no flowers planted as the desk says, though I do not know if there are any flowers to plant as I have not encountered such seeds.

Also, does the neighborhood watch monster have a set number of encounters? I have fought and beat it about 5 times, and even though I still get the warning after seeing the event on the tv, it will not bug me anymore, even if I stay still right in front of it waiting several hours, no sign-monster bothers me. I wouldn't mind this except oddly I would like to fight it again.

(+1)

Glad you're digging the game!

The beehive definitely seems bugged. There was a recent fix that should have fixed this in the latest update. If you're on the latest version, try picking the hive up and placing it again. If the bug persists, please email a copy of your save folder to support@illadvisedrecords.com and I can take a look and fix the bug.

There is no set number of encounters for the watcher. It triggers randomly as you walk around town (though it is not guaranteed to appear, especially if you are not walking around town much).

okay . so i only skimmed the comments so apologies.. but the text in the menu hurts to look at, with the overlapping and idk, 3d attempted effect? not sure what its called.

it doesnt look like the rest of the game text is like that, but i also did not see an option to change that. if it is in-game, an option to use a normal text would make it more accessible. im gonna give it a proper shot, if the text is like in the images, and hopefully have more to say after.

(2 edits)

All of this can be changed/disabled in the settings. There are several fonts to choose from, and the chroma filter can be disabled.

(+1)

ahh i tried the filter but it didn't seem to make a difference. ill try changing it and actually loading the game, i had just looked at the text in the settings menu and alternated between on and off.

the concept sounds fun so i really wanna give it the best shot i can. thanks!

(+2)

I've been loving this! Very fun, great designs, worldbuilding and characters both friend and foe alike.

I encountered an odd bug where when I try to place a scarecrow, the placement marker is stuck on the upper-left corner of the screen. I never had this happen before except for this latest play session.

I DID alt-tab to a Steam chat window before switching back, and several minutes later traveled to the farm and tried to place a newly made scarecrow only to get this bug.

To clarify, this is a itch.io demo not a steam demo, so maybe that had something to do with it?

Also one point of trouble is when the resources are regenerated, including the mine, if you are in a mine you may get stuck with objects spawning onto your spot. Maybe the player could be scripted to be kicked out of the mine?

All in all I have been loving this demo though! Fantastic work!

(+2)

Glad you're digging the game! The placement issue is indeed due to switching windows - placement items lock to your cursor location, so when the window loses focus (either due to switching windows, or a popup etc.), the game can't find the cursor. Clicking the window will re-focus it, and resolve the issue.

(+2)

I love the vibe, I'll be keeping an eye on this

please on linux

(+1)(-2)

linux lmaoooo

(+1)

It is already Linux compatible via Proton

(+4)

Vai inserir legendas pt Br né?... Por favor, Você precisa fazer isso.

Yes, I plan to

(+1)

bom jogo, vai ter tradução pt br

Yes, I plan to

(+2)

Darkwood vibes.. didnt played demo, seems like cool and atmospheric game, looking forward for release

(+2)

Played this on Twitch awhile back, really looking foward to getting back into the demo and finishing it. Thank you for the demo!

(+1)

Maybe I'm just dumb but where are the gates that the gatekeeper opens in his quest?

That aside awesome game, looking forward to future updates :)

They are the big brown gates (one north of the house, one near the ladder to the lake)

(+1)

Where do I find the basic axe? I'm really struggling to locate it.

You get it late into the demo from a task

(+2)

Made an account on here to say I love absolutely everything about this game so far. I was following the development on tiktok and shortly before it was supposed to be taken away in the US I downloaded the alpha version on steam!

My only complaint is I don't have the money to support on patreon to play the full demo (times are rough unfortunately), but I have been keeping an eye out for the updates and I cannot wait to play the full version one day <3

(-4)

currently playing on hard and the inability to run from fights genuinely ruins the game. literally completely screwed over if i'm forced to encounter the neighborhood watch and get stuck in a viscous  cycle with the hungry plant where it just soul drains over and over making me waste all of my heal items till i inevitably die and have to start from last save.

(+2)

I would not suggest playing on hard mode unless you have played on normal first and have decided that you would enjoy a significantly more difficult experience.  The lack of an ability to run is intentional, and the game is balanced around this, however the game is balanced for normal mode, as it is the primary intended experience.

(1 edit) (+1)

Currently really enjoying this, wish I could buy more cleansing balm to grow more plant. But yeah, got about 6 hours out of this demo which shows the amount of dedication the developer has put into it. Really looking forward to more content.

Also all the monsters I've seen so far are cool AF, and I'm looking forward to finding more.

(+1)

Hi, this may seem like a dumb question but how do you fill the watering can ?

Interact with the water on the farm (to the south of the entrance)

(+1)

are you planning to put it on steam??? :DD

(+1)

It is already on Steam

(+1)

This game looks very Lovecraftian and Lynchian.

(+3)

does this game support xbox controlle?

(+1)

Yes

(+1)

Welcome To Elderfield! (Demo)

Do you like Stardew Valley style of games and wish you could find one with some horror elements, lovecraftian like themes and a rad soundtrack?

I definitely do and this game blends it all together very well!

All the characters have been very interesting with options to befriend some. News Casts are fun and add some extra spookiness to each day with special events. People talking about removing and wearing their skin, 10/10. Combat is very turn based RPG which was pretty cool, with leveling, equipment, stats and such. Your neighbor is a talking cat! Horror elements come from strange events, monsters. entities, local urban legends and some jokes.

I have not fully deep dived into this yet but so many amazing things I encountered within the hour I played, highly recommend checking out this demo at least if you are into these style of games.

Great Job and looking forward to the full release!

(+1)

Thanks for making a video about the game! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

(+1)

haven't played it yet but this style of game is something i've been obsessed with seeing executed or made myself, big hype for it <3

(+1)

This game is so cool I've been grinding it for a few days, the Junji Ito style is so sick can't wait for more content

Hey I'm sorry if this is a weird place to put this but I would like to make music for this game? If that would be something you are interested in

(+2)

Thanks for the offer, but I am not looking for any contributors. I am a musician myself and producing the game's OST solo.

WHAT The music IS SO good I was thinking about playing it in the background while i do life things

(+1)

I am IN LOVE with this game. Can't wait for it to be finished.

Thanks for making a video, and I'm glad you enjoyed the demo!

(+1)

The game is really cool! Keep on going :)

(+1)

Hi! I have a quick question about the game's languages. Are you planning to include Spanish as one of the available options? If so, would you need help with the translation?

I'm a final-year English-Spanish Translation student, currently looking for projects where I can contribute and gain experience.

Let me know if there's any way I can help. Cheers!

Spanish is in the plans, but localization is more than a year away as the game is still early in development.

Okay, thanks!

(+1)

I have not had the chance to play it much sadly, but I have been watching gameplays, and I absolutely love it so far.

I wonder if you plan on adding any Arabic translations to this. I am an Arabic translator and would love to volunteer to provide them in case you do! (Individually or with a team if you already got one)

You should play it

I have been busy with work and watching videos while commuting 😭😭 but I'll definitely play more when I get more time

(1 edit)

I am urgently looking for volunteer Arabic translators

contact me asap on hamzahstudio2020@gmail.com

(+1)

I have a question about the language option. Do you folks have any plan to add other language options? I’m a freelance translator from English to Japanese. I played the demo today and I couldn’t help myself from writing to you. I loved the music, atmosphere and J-horror inspired art. If multiple language options are not planned, that’s totally understandable. Please let me know if you are interested in the Japanese localization!

The current plan is to have the game professionally localized into many different languages for release, though this is still a while off yet. Japanese is one of the planned languages.

(+1)

OK, thanks for letting me know! Looking forward to the full release!

(+1)

I can't believe I completely missed the fact that ill-advised records made a game. I'm so stoked for this, just bought a couple records.

Nice!

(+1)

Hey, sorry if this is like mentioned somewhere in the post, but is the artwork inspired from Junji Ito? It really reminds me of it

(+1)

Yup - the character portraits in particular are drawn in a horror manga style which is based on the artwork of Junji Ito, Kazuo Umezu, Shinichi Koga Suehiro Maruo and a others.

(+1)

Looks sick, great work!

Thanks!

(1 edit) (+1)

Watched a video of gameplay and I get Welcome to Night Vale vibes looks very fun!

WTNV is def a big inspiration for the game!

make it cooperative plssss

(+3)

This wont be possible unfortunately.

(+3)

Yo, It looks interesting

Can this be made compatible with joiplay? I tried downloading it on Android but it said I needed the fossil plugin, unfortunately the fossil plugin has been discontinued and links to it have been taken down.

(+1)

The game is not currently mobile compatible. This may be explored in the future, but for now it is just for windows PCs and Steam Deck.

It was compatible via third party emulator like I said, I had played it using fossil but wound up getting a new phone and losing Access to the fossil emulator. Unfortunately the person who created it got harassed and wound up taking down all download links to it.

But as it was created with rpg maker it should be compatible with joiplay rpg maker plugin. (But like I said when installing it, it defaults to the fossil plugin which no longer exists)

(+1)

There is nothing I can do about that unfortunately. The game is dependent on Fossil. I am not familiar with Joiplay or how it works, or what would be necessary to make any of this compatible.

So homie, did you try what I suggested below?

As a fellow mobile gamer myself, let us know if you were able to find a solution as there are other less experienced players using Fossil like myself that are waiting to hear if you find a workaround for this?

It is what I used, albeit a bit older. Haven't tested with elderfield yet but did test it with other games I had, seems to work. Most rpg maker games can be played with joiplay with the rpg maker plug in save for a few rare cases.

Not at all familiar with Fossil but will this version of it possibly do what you're looking for here?

https://github.com/Aesica/fossil-MV-MZ

If not, you may want to post asking for the version of it you are looking for on that same site/forum as most there seem to be familiar with Fossil and may be able to pm you the version you are looking for.

This game is amazing so far. I love the art style since it reminds me so much of Junji Ito's works. This demo already ha so much already. I'm looking forward to the full game.

(+1)

Thanks for making a video! I'm glad you're digging the game.

I couldn't say right now - these options will be explored closer to release. The game is playable via Proton on linux already (and is Steam Deck compatible).

(1 edit) (+1)

Really looking forward to the full game, there's a lot of interesting things to do and it's clear this is being actively worked on, which is rather exciting.

One thing that's been on my mind since the beginning so far is, while I appreciate the radio show feature and see what its inspirations are, it could use some improvements as well as accessibility options.
I.e. a transcription of the text for players who are hard of hearing, because otherwise there is an entire possible playerbase locked out of some content. This would for sure be useful for other types of players as well.

The other thought I have for this may be more of a personal preference, but I think it's worth pointing out regardless. So, I find Welcome to Elderfield to be pretty immersive so far. The variety of features makes the world feel alive, and environmental events and such that are out of your control help this, too. As with characters showing up unexpected places (although you quickly enough learn their routine).

The radio show's dubbing kind of breaks this, though. Probably these lines are read by the developer themselves or a friend. The cadence of these readings makes you pretty acutely aware it's
1. inspired by WTNV and
2. as I said earlier, someone without particular experience in dubbing.
There's also the fact nothing else in the game is voiced, so it's rather jarring on that front (maybe the television should have this too? Or maybe if both were text only, it would fit better).

Otherwise.. I think if these line reads were done by somebody with experience hosting radio shows, it would add a lot to the immersiveness of this world. I realize it's essentially a one-person-team working on this now and it might turn out to be a considerable expense, but if the radio show feature were to be kept as is, I think a professional dubbing would add a lot of depth to the world of Elderfield as a whole. I.e. if an older gentleman with that sort of working background were hired for the line reads.

On that note, more interactable and relevant characters (with character portraits and friendship development) of varied ages would give the world a fuller feel, too. Instead of it essentially just being that your player character is a young adult / adult and so is every single other character with notable substance to them.

Since this game already has been and inevitably will continue being compared to Stardew Valley and I do think Elderfield is much better, much more fun, in a plethora of aspects already -- exciting! I hope to see it come even more into its own.
One of my biggest gripes with Stardew is the characters' and worlds' lack of depth. NPCs feel rather hollow and uninteresting and their stories play out rather quickly, they kind of become husks afterward. And most of it is centered around or locked behind a romancing plotline. So, with more varied NPC ages and characters you can't romance being just as fleshed out, I think Stardew could've been a much better experience.

I hope WTE can learn from shortcomings of other games of its genre in this sense. I see its trying to do a lot all at once already. I hope, if possible, more collaborators can be brought into the team to make it a real masterwork of a game. Two brains are better than one, and the more the merrier. Plus, it would considerably reduce the workload, wouldn't it? Wouldn't want to see such a promising developer burnt out.

(-1)

Also, sorry to see all the comments about tracing and whatnot. I imagine it's frustrating.

I can fully understand honing your craft based on / inspired by another style, and trying to replicate great artists whose work you enjoy. It's fun to redraw, to imitate, and do studies like that, I do it a lot too! It takes hard work and great talent to keep at it consistently, and it's incredibly impressive.

I appreciate the inspirations for Elderfield and your own art as a whole shining through in the game. It might be interpreted it as a sort of love letter to its inspirations, you know? I think that's nice.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you're enjoying the game!

(+1)

This was so awesome! I loved every minute of this and I can't wait for the full game!
